Environmental & Sustainability Policy

Purpose of the Policy

JamJar Flowers is committed to environmentally sustainable practices. This policy sets out:

  • the steps the company will take to reduce its carbon footprint

  • how we will comply with environmental regulations

  • how we will work with suppliers, contractors and clients to meet environmental responsibilities

Role and Responsibilities

  • senior managers have overall responsibility for this policy

  • employees are responsible for following this policy

  • the director is responsible for reviewing this policy once a year

Waste Management

Any waste that comes from commercial activities counts as business waste.
The main types of waste from our business are green waste, paper and cardboard and soft plastics.
This waste is properly disposed of by using COM:POST (a private company) to collect and compost our green waste, on site recycling for paper and cardboard and using First Mile (a private company) to collect and recycle our soft plastics.

Pollution

We endeavour to ensure that our work practices do not breach regulations on air, water and noise pollution.

Energy Consumption

We reduce our consumption of electricity, gas and oil by:

  • installing motion sensors and timers on lights so they are not switched on outside of business hours or when spaces are not in use

  • using low energy lightbulbs, such as LEDs

  • encouraging employees to turn off lights and other electrical items when no longer in use

  • setting computers and other machines to switch to standby mode after a period of inactivity

  • turning heating off when the desired temperature is reached. Heating is not on continuously

  • routinely maintaining our lighting and heating systems to ensure they are working efficiently

We continuously look for ways to upgrade our systems to improve their efficiency.

Water Consumption

We reduce our water consumption by:

  • encouraging employees to report any leaks or drips

  • routinely maintaining our water systems to ensure they are working efficiently

We have filtered tap water and discourage employees from using bottled water.

Recycling

We recycle cardboard & paper, glass, plastics, soft plastics, green waste and food. Recycling bins are clearly labelled and placed where they are easily accessible.

Paper

We keep our paper consumption as low as possible. For example:

  • we ask employees to keep printing to a minimum

  • we do not make unnecessary copies of documents

  • employees are encouraged to keep digital files instead of paper files

Training

Our environmental expectations of employees, such as the expectation that they recycle, are included in company training delivered at the start of employment. These messages are reinforced during refresher training.

Environmental Permits

JamJar Flowers does not need environment permits for its business operations. However, if this changes appropriate permits will be applied for from the Environment Agency and relevant local authorities.

Customers & the Supply Chain

We prioritise working with suppliers that share our commitment to good environmental practices.
The tenders we produce all include the requirement to have an environment and sustainability policy (or similar document). This policy is available to all our customers and suppliers, and any potential partners, on request.

Use of AI

  1. We recognise that AI technologies can support our environmental goals by improving efficiency, reducing waste, and enabling smarter decision-making. However, we also acknowledge the environmental and ethical implications of AI, including energy consumption, data privacy, and algorithmic transparency.

  2. To ensure our use of AI aligns with our sustainability commitments:

  • Efficiency First: We will prioritise AI tools that demonstrably reduce resource use, such as optimising energy consumption, or enhancing digital capabilities to reduce printing and travel.

  • Lower-Impact Tools: Where possible, we will select AI platforms and services that operate on energy-efficient infrastructure and are committed to carbon reduction.

  • Transparency & Accountability: We will assess the environmental footprint of AI tools we adopt, including their data processing demands, and ensure they meet our standards for ethical and responsible use.
