AN INTRODUCTION TO FLORISTRY: AUTUMN
Autumn is full of rich colours, sculptural flowers and textural foliage, fruits and berries. Join us at Covent Garden Flower Market and be inspired by the seasons offerings before spending a day at JamJar Flowers. We will use wild berries, grasses, seed heads and structured foliage; dahlias, chrysanthemums and hydrangeas in rich hues of deep reds and oranges. There is no previous floristry experience required on this course which is aimed at beginners but open to all. Whether you are looking for skills you can apply to making arrangements at home, or if you are a budding florist looking for inspiration, we will welcome you with open arms and a strong cup of coffee to kick off the day.
Saturday, October 15th 2016: 8:00am - 3:00pm
The day will start with a visit to the Covent Garden Flower Market in Vauxhall where we will introduce you to our favourite traders and explain how the buying process works. Together we will select and purchase feature flowers and interesting foliage to use in our arrangements later in the day.
We take a short trip back to the JamJar Studio, situated in a Victorian craft makers yard in Kennington, where we will start the day with coffee and pastries before we get to work on conditioning our flowers. We will teach you the technique of spiralling your stems to create a hand tied bouquet for a JamJar which you will take home at the end of the day.
Lunch is served at 12:30pm, re-energising you for the afternoon. We will get back to work with an intricate lesson in wiring for hair flowers and buttonholes, before putting those skills into practice. Finally, using the skills you've learnt throughout the day, you will be ready to tackle a large foliage based arrangement in a vintage bucket.
Our head florists will be on hand throughout the day to answer questions and to offer advice, from buying and prepping your flowers to how to make the most of them once you've taken them home. The course is packed full of tips, advice and techniques and is designed to give you the confidence to go out and purchase your own flowers, and to make arrangements for your home.
At the end of your day you can take your JamJar of flowers and buttonholes home to enjoy and re-create.
Skills you will learn: market orientation, flower selection and purchasing; flower conditioning; hand tied arrangements; wiring; large arrangement.
